The Breakers

Palm Beach is the perfect place for a little winter getaway. For such a tiny little island, it boasts high-end designer shopping, beautiful beaches, charming storefronts, gourmet restaurants, fabulous resorts, and quaint boutique hotels. My favorite three hotels on the island are The Breakers, of course, and two fabulous smaller boutique hotels -- The Colony and The Brazilian Court.

As I mentioned before, The Breakers was the original Palm Beach resort built by Henry Flagler. Today, the resort remains the picture of turn of the 20th-century elegance. The Breakers is as huge as it is stunning and includes all of the amenities -- Pools, beach access, full spa, golf course, tennis courts, lots of onsite shopping (they even have a Lilly Pulitzer store in the hotel), and plenty of gourmet dining.

As much as I love the fabulousness of The Breakers, I actually prefer two of the island's smaller hotels. The Colony Hotel wins hands down for ambiance. I mean, look at that pink and green hallway! The entire hotel is decorated in a barrage of bright and preppy hues and patterns. Even if you're not staying at The Colony, it is worth a visit for a pool-side brunch or for dinner at their Polo restaurant.

If navy stripes, green palm print, pink walls, and gingham table cloths aren't your scene, I recommend the less-preppy, but equally beautiful Brazilian Court Hotel. The Brazilian Court has a more tropical, French colonial feel. The hotel offers fine dining, a full service salon, and Lilly Pulitzer bikes to explore the island (you can't escape Lilly in Palm Beach). Like The Colony, you don't have to stay at the Brazilian Court to appreciate it. Emily and I had an amazing French-inspired brunch outdoor on the stunning terrace of their award-winning Cafe Boulud.

All in all, Palm Beach is the perfect winter getaway... just as it was more than a century ago!
